Know what, I finally learned how to use the Logitechwebcam but I stillstruggled with the grainy result andwas not sure how to post it on the blog, ack! (It would be nice if Amy Efron could come up hereand help me, eh!)Still, Ihaven’t gotten aroundto look at the original series of the 1913 NAD Film Collection butI think I will on Monday. Hopefully, I will be able to vlog then!

Anyway, I looked up Jack Gannon’sDeaf Heritage: A Narrative History of Deaf America on the use of the term ‘mute,’ and how Veditz felt about Alexander Graham Bell, as well as ‘A new race of pharaohs that knew not Joseph.’ As you read the excerpts below, you might realize what Ella Lentz meant when she discussed ‘deaf mute’ in her vlog, as well as Carl’s. If you read Albert Ballin’s The Deaf Mute Howls, you would know that AGB signed fluently. Here are three excerpts from Gannon’s Deaf Heritage.

Page 62: The use of the term ‘Deaf Mutes’ in the title of the National Association of the Deaf occurred at a time when the teaching of speech to the deaf was spreading across the country. Educators were trying to eliminate the use of the term ‘mute,’ in schools for the deaf and particularly in the title of the National Convention of Deaf Mutes. George Veditz, a vocal dyed-in-the-wool combinist observed: ‘If oral magicians who yank educational rabbits out of silk hats and pearls of speech out of the mouths of those who have never heard, choke over it, why bless ‘em!’ By the third convention, the Association had dropped the offensive term from its name.

Page 77: George W. Veditz, a deaf teacher, called Alexander Graham Bell [AGB] the American most feared by deaf people, saying, ‘… he comes in the guise of a friend, and [is], therefore, the most feared enemy of the American deaf, past and present.’

Page 363: In the early 1900s George W. Veditz expressed concern that ‘A new race of pharaohs that knew not Joseph’ are taking over the land and many of our American Schools. They do not understand signs for they cannot sign. They proclaim that signs are worthless and of no help to thedeaf. Enemies of sign language’they are enemies of the true welfare of the deaf.

For some of you, I hope theseexcerptsclarify.
