POSITION: COMMUNICATION SPECIALIST (Speech-Language) School for the Deaf, Birth to 21

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The annual employment contract shall be based on the standard number of working days in the academic year (currently 183 days, August to June), beginning with the 2007/08 school year. Base salary shall be established pursuant to the Teacher Salary Schedule, and based on appropriate education and experience. Excellent benefits.

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION .

This position reports to the Director of Special Education, and is responsible for providing speech language instruction to elementary, middle school, high school and/or transition students who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree in Speech Language or closely related field from an accredited college or university, with specialization in Deaf Education.

Must hold or be eligible for appropriate special services licensure in the State of Colorado, endorsed in Speech Language / Audiology.

Experience teaching / working with children (in an educational environment) who are Deaf / hard-of¬ hearing.

Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the ADVANCED skill level, as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment tool, and according to school policy.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILL / ABILITY:

Knowledge of and ability to apply current speech language educational practices associated with students who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing, including knowledge of hearing aids, FM systems, auditory training techniques, and cochlear implant technology

Ability to communicate effectively with Deaf children

Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback

Ability to participate effectively in team setting

Strong interpersonal skills

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs work associated with speech language instruction: organizes speech therapy to meet the goals and objectives of student IEPs (Individual Education Plans); organizes and keeps a system of records related to student attendance, student progress and other required information; develops objectives and presents lessons or strategies which meet the needs of individuals and groups, and promotes high levels of success; performs speech diagnostic evaluations and makes recommendations regarding communication habilitation strategies for students who are Deaf, blind and/or multiply disabled sensory impaired students.

Demonstrates knowledge / skill in the areas of task analysis, assessment, behavior management, organization /planning, curriculum development. parent relations and teamwork.

Works as part of the education / diagnostics team related to the assessment process and the development of students’ IEP’s to accomplish lesson objectives, work with current curriculum, and maximize students’ communication potential.

Utilizes appropriate communication skills with each student. . Provides outreach services as assigned, including consultation services regarding communication habilitation programs for students who are Deaf, blind and/or multiply disabled sensory impaired.

Positively serves as a team member in the Student Services team, and the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind(CSDB) as a whole; and participates in regular team and departmental meetings, school and instructional meetings as required.

Provides parent consultation; participates in selected parent-focused activities, etc., and provides information to students, peers when speech concerns are at issue, utilizing appropriate local community resources.

Participates in activities related to staff development and training/workshops as appropriate, including presentation of information to CSDB I LEA (Local Education Agency) staff and parents as requested.

Performs other appropriate duties as assigned, including activities related to Medicaid billing.
