Times Community Newspapers – Special education is a right, not an extravagance:

Special education is a right, not an extravagance

“As the county discusses the school budget, it is important to remember that some costs are not debatable.

A lot of the special education budget is mandated by federal and state laws that cannot be ignored. Special education is not some privilege that coddles children.

Special education provides the tools that help schools comply with a student’s right to a free and appropriate education.

Children who use wheelchairs have to be accommodated – by law.

Children who are deaf or blind must be accommodated – by law.

Children who have seizure disorders, autism, spina bifida, Down Syndrome, ADHD/ADD, Fragile X Syndrome, etc. must be accommodated in the public school system – by law.

We cannot turn back the clock to the way things used to be.

Segregation was wrong in the 60s, and it is wrong now. All children have the right to a public education. But this costs money. …”
