Teacher seeks sign standards

UW-EC instructor authors book to help deaf students

In her four years teaching American Sign Language at UW-Eau Claire, Angela Neff has faced her fair share of wrinkled brows and sighs from students.

Many learners try to copy every sign they see in class into their notebooks, but find it impossible to keep up, Neff said.

It’s a conundrum. Differences in regional dialects make it difficult for students to look up signs out of class. But lecture time is needed to practice communication, not stenography, Neff said.

So when the Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company contacted her about writing a new ASL textbook, Neff accepted the offer. The book, scheduled to be released in the fall of 2008, will be used in Midwestern college and high school”
