Lip-Reading Helps the Hearing Too

The deaf and hearing impaired have been doing it forever, and now there’s new evidence that even those with perfect hearing can benefit from lip reading. So says a new study titled “Lip-Read Me Now, Hear Me Better Later.”

The research by University of California Riverside psychology professor Lawrence D. Rosenblum and graduate students Rachel M. Miller and Kauyumari Sanchez utilized 60 college undergraduates. The students were asked to lip-read sentences from a silent videotape of a talker’s face. These subjects all had normal hearing and vision and had no formal lip reading experience.
