Broken pipe causes early pool closure at Sir James Whitney

Winter aquatic programs will be canceled since the pool at the Joe Demezsa Sports Centre at Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf has been closed indefinitely due to a pipe breaking last spring. It is not known when or if the pool will be opened.

“The pool actually doesn’t belong to the city,” said Tanya Grierson, program supervisor for the city of Belleville’s Parks and Recreation Department. “It belongs to the province and the ministry of education. We just lease the pool from the province. The school is waiting for word from the province as to when and if it will be fixed. That’s what we’ve been told at this point from the school.”

The department is still working with local businesses to have a limited aquatic program. The Aqua Fitness program will continue in January at the pool in the Ramada Inn, and the Harbour Club will have the Junior Lifeguard Club program, a program for youths of eight to 15 years of age who passed Level 7 of the Red Cross Program. Additionally with the Junior Lifeguard Club, the Bronze Star level will be offered as well.

The city of Belleville made the programs more accessible to all residents by getting rid of the non-city taxpayer rate.

Registration for these programs starts Dec. 4 for city taxpayers and for non-city taxpayers on Dec. 7. The Aqua Fitness program costs $63 for city taxpayers and $79 for non-city taxpayers, and the Junior Lifeguard program is $81 for city taxpayers and $101 for non-city taxpayers. For more information on all Recreation Programs, visit http://www.city.belleville.on.ca. For registration for these programs, call the Parks and Recreation office at 613-966-4632.
