DEAF MAN CLEARED OF PUSHING MUM INTO FIRE

11 May 2007

A deaf man was cleared of pushing his former girlfriend’s mother into an open fire, after telling a jury she fell over.

Philip Cook denied attacking Sue Green (68) as she slept on a sofa at her home while suffering from flu.

Mrs Green suffered horrific burns during the Boxing Day incident, it was alleged.

But a jury at Lincoln Crown Court took less then two hours to find Cook (44) not guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm to the pensioner.

The prosecution claimed Cook woke Mrs Green by shaking her, then began punching her before pushing her into an open fire.

But giving evidence by sign language, Cook told the jury Mrs Green fell into the fire after he tried to wake her.

Cook , formerly of Tudor Close, Newtoft, near Market Rasen, said: “She doesn’t understand me and I don’t understand her very well because she doesn’t sign and I don’t lip read.

“When she stood up she was scared because she saw me.”

Cook said Mrs Green got up but then fell into the fireplace.
